´Top talent´ Joao Felix will learn plenty from Simeone, says Gomes

Atletico Madrid attacker Joao Felix will learn a lot from Diego Simeone and has natural talent much like Bernardo Silva, according to Nuno Gomes.

Joao Felix joined Atletico from Benfica for a reported €120million last year, but has struggled to live up to the price tag in his first season at the LaLiga club.

The 20-year-old has scored six goals and provided three assists in 28 games for Atletico, but his season has been hampered by several injuries.

Portugal great Gomes said his compatriot would learn plenty from Simeone, while comparing his talent to Manchester City star Silva.

Joao Felix, first of all, is also a player that I admire a lot and comparing to Bernardo Silva, they have the same situation in terms of natural talent, he told Stats Perform N…

Liel Abada may leave Celtic as boss Brendan Rodgers reveals empathy for player

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers admits Israel international Liel Abada may leave on loan if he cannot get his mind refocused on playing for the club.

Abada will again sit out Celtic’s cinch Premiership encounter with Kilmarnock on Saturday after not being in the right frame of mind to face St Mirren last weekend.

The 22-year-old has faced pressure in his home country because of support for Palestine among Celtic fans.

The situation flared up the day after the October 7 Hamas attacks in Israel, which led to more than 1,100 deaths plus the taking of hostages, when two banners among Celtic fans at Parkhead read: “Free Palestine” and “Victory to the Resistance”.

Palestine flags have continued to be flown among Celtic supporters amid Israel’s ongoin…

Capello hails Neymar improvement

Former Real Madrid coach Fabio Capello has hailed the improvement of Barcelona star Neymar.

Neymar is the top-scorer in La Liga this season with 14 goals, one ahead of his Barca team-mate Luis Suarez.

The Brazilian is in the final-three of the 2015 Ballon d Or, and Capello praised his development since he made the switch from Santos to European football with Barca in 2013.

Another player who is improving a lot is Neymar, Capello said.

When I saw him playing with Brazil, he was a good player but he played ten minutes and then disappeared. Now he runs a lot, fights a lot.

Neymar was an integral part of the Barca side that won four of five league games without Lionel Messi, with the 23-year-old scoring eight goals and contributing three as…

Tite enjoys ´human dimension´ of Colombia friendly more than Brazil win

Tite would have preferred there to be no winner in the friendly between Brazil and Colombia, which raised funds for those affected by November s Chapecoense tragedy.

The match was organised after the plane carrying Chapecoense to Medellin for the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana final against Atletico Nacional crashed in Colombia, killing 71 people including 19 players and coach Caio Junior.

Brazil beat Colombia 1-0 in a meeting between domestic-based sides at Estadio Nilton Santos on Wednesday, with the Confederation of Brazilian Football announcing that the US$1.2million raised from broadcasting rights would be given to the club.

Chapecoense will also receive the funds raised from ticket sales, which is set to be transferred to the families of those who los…

Alderweireld not disappointed to stay at Tottenham amid Man Utd links

Toby Alderweireld was not disappointed to stay at Tottenham, with the Belgium centre-back a reported target for Manchester United in the previous transfer window.

Alderweireld featured in 14 Premier League games in 2017-18, with the defender s action restricted by injury and seemingly falling out of favour under manager Mauricio Pochettino.

But despite being in the last year of his Tottenham contract the Belgium international has been reintegrated into the team this term, making three league starts including one in Spurs eye-catching 3-0 win at Old Trafford.

United were said to be among the clubs interested in signing Alderweireld but the 29-year-old denies pushing for a move, with Pochettino having given the media a lengthy update on the player s future last m…

Maradona ´set to stay on´

Diego Maradona is set to stay as Argentina coach despite their loss to Germany in the World Cup quarter-finals, amid reports Friday the Argentine Federation would offer him the chance to stay on for the next tournament in neighbouring Brazil in 2014.

Maradona was a surprise choice to lead the team when he took over in autumn 2008, having had little coaching experience.

The team struggled through the qualifiers and he tried out more than 100 players.

But until the Germans proved too strong for his men, Maradona s Argentinians had generally impressed by winning all their opening phase matches and also dispatching Mexico in the round of last 16.

On Wednesday, a Federation spokesman said that Maradona who has not been seen in public since his return from Sou…

Napoli response delights Benitez

Rafael Benitez has praised his Napoli side for putting UEFA Champions League elimination behind them as they beat Inter 4-2 on Sunday.

Napoli accrued 12 points from their six Group F games in Europe, but it was not enough to put them above Arsenal or Borussia Dortmund, although they returned to league action with a second win in three matches at the Stadio San Paolo.

Goals from Gonzalo Higuain, Dries Mertens, Blerim Dzemaili and Jose Callejon sealed the points for Benitez s side and moved them to within two points of second-placed Roma, who play Milan on Monday.

The Spaniard was pleased with the reaction from his side but was quick to point that he expects them to get better as they look to get back amongst Serie A s table toppers.
